Com a crescente utilização de navios convertidos em unidades de produção e armazenamento, surgiu a necessidade de modelos numéricos que simulem a movimentação dinâmica da embarcação sob a influência de agentes ambientais, tais como vento e corrente. Modelos matemáticos que representam a dinâmica do sistema de forma realista são geralmente complexos. Tal complexidade é ainda maior quando se consideram dois navios conectados, como verifica-se na operação de descarga de petróleo de um FPSO (navio-mãe) para um navio "shuttle" (aliviador). Os modelos matemáticos envolvidos são difíceis de serem tratados analiticamente. Em algumas análises, mesmo simulações numéricas tornam-se custosas em termos de tempo de simulação, inviabilizando certas análises. Este trabalho consiste na elaboração de um modelo arquetípico (simplificado) que mantém as principais características do modelo completo. Dessa forma, análises qualitativas do sistema tornam-se mais fáceis de serem realizadas, através de, por exemplo, criação de mapas de bifurcação e bacias de atração. O modelo arquetípico foi utilizado para realizar análises mais profundas da operação de descarregamento, até então não efetuadas para o modelo completo, assim como análise da influência da variação de alguns parâmetros de projeto do sistema sobre sua dinâmica.

The growing use of converted tankers as deep-water floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units has prompted the need for mathematical models capable of predicting accurately the dynamical behavior of these systems under the combined action of environmental agents such as wind and ocean currents. Mathematical models representing the dynamics of FPSOs realistically are usually complex. Complexity increases when two interconnected ships (for example, the FPSO unit and a shuttle vessel in tandem configuration) are considered, as is the case when offloading operations are investigated. The resulting mathematical models are difficult to study by analytical means, and even numerical simulations can become time-consuming, precluding in-depth investigations. The present work describes the development of an analytical (simplified) mathematical model for the dynamics of one or two vessels; it is shown that this model retains the main qualitative dynamical features of more complete models, such as their bifurcation diagrams and basins of attraction. The model has been also validated against experimental results. The archetypal model proposed here has been used for in-depth analysis of the dynamics of offloading operations, not previously made with more sophisticated models. A qualitative parametric study was also carried out to assess the influence of some key design parameters upon the overall system dynamics.
