Abstract in English
This dissertation about Fundação Memorial da América Latina begins with a reflection on the method used. This is because it was understood that, as the researcher has been a career employee at this foundation for over 20 years, this factor alone would lead to advantages and difficulties resulting from extreme familiarity with the object of study. Object of study, incidentally, related to memory and time, since it is a "Memorial". Indeed, all the constituent parts of its name, "Memorial", "América" and "Latina", were problematized. To emphasize (and not hide) the complexity of the qualities and characteristics - difficult to define, measure and apprehend - of something that presents itself as a "Memorial da América Latina" (Latin America's Memorial), it was decided to write in a memorialist way, without disregarding the scientific rigor. It shows how the dream of Latin American integration, the reason for the Memorial's existence, has remained alive since Simón Bolívar. With that in mind, this study is a history of the creation of the Memorial from original sources kept at the Fundação Darcy Ribeiro (Fundar), in Brasília, and at the library of the Memorial da América Latina. In addition to the documents, the bibliography concerning the theme was analyzed, especially the writings of Darcy Ribeiro. Key characters were also interviewed, such as former employees Felipe Macedo, Jussara Carbonaro, Maureen Bisilliat and Fábio Magalhães. What were the plans, dreams and aspirations of the creators of the Memorial - Orestes Quércia, then governor of São Paulo, Oscar Niemeyer and Darcy Ribeiro? How was Quércia's project related to the lifelong activity of former governor Franco Montoro? How did Oscar Niemeyer and Darcy Ribeiro, already in the Memorial's first year of life, foresee the risks that the institution was running? And what happened, after 33 years, to the Memorial's life? Finally, what message would send the current generation to Darcy Ribeiro, if they could, to explain to him what the Memorial has become and suggest ways to give it a new meaning?
