Abstract in English
The Muses of America was the name given to Alfonsina Storni, Juana de Ibarbourou and Gabriela Mistral in 1938, and with that name they came to occupy a place in the Latin American literary canon. However, they were not only poets, but also writers and intellectuals who thought about their environment and expressed their positions through pen and paper. Therefore, in this paper we seek to unveil the path they traced until that moment of institutionalization, in order to understand them as witnesses of a process of profound changes brought about by modernization and as female protagonists of that process. To this end, we delve into modernization, punctuating the relationship between historical and cultural context with the life and work of these poets, establishing the consequences of modernity in the life and written production of women. In this regard, we enter the newly born feminist movement in Argentina, Chile and Uruguay, to understand the relationship of the poets with the main demands and conquests achieved by the feminisms of the first decades of the twentieth century, reflecting on their writings and their different positions on these. Finally, taking into account the social and cultural changes, as well as the new place that women began to occupy in society, we seek to focus on the poetic production of the three authors, considering the obstacles, expectations and social impositions that women writers of that time faced, as well as the strategies they used to write what they wanted and how they wanted. Thus, once they are understood within the context of production, we stress the path from the lectures they gave in 1938, where it is possible to distinguish the poetic personality and the personal and intellectual project of each of the Muses, as well as to understand the historical importance of that moment for women in literature.
