Keywords in Portuguese

Levante do Gueto de Varsóvia
Marek Edelman

Warsaw Ghetto Uprising
Abstract in English
Having gone more than 30 years without talking about his role as commander of the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in Poland during the Holocaust, Marek Edelman gave reporter Hanna Krall - both Jews, Poles, and Holocaust survivors - an interview that, later, entered the book Zdążyć przed Panem Bogiem (1976) translated as Chegar Antes de Deus. Between excerpts from a long account of the events in the Uprising and excerpts from scenes from Edelman's life as a cardiologist after the war, Krall proposes to retell the events of Edelman's life according to the ex-combatant's remembrance process, who, for having chosen to remain in Poland after the war, caused a clash with the Zionist movement that resulted in his testimonies being silenced for decades. In Brazil, especially, the works of Krall and Edelman are practically unknown. To change this scenario, a full translation of the text was made, from the original Polish to Portuguese, as well as its historical contextualization. The work is an important contribution to Brazilian Jewish Studies and Holocaust Studies by bringing into Portuguese new voices to the testimonies of survivors.
