A questão da identidade – a identidade de um indivíduo – tem sido amplamente discutida por estudantes e pesquisadores em vários artigos e livros acadêmicos nas últimas décadas. Contudo, pouca atenção tem sido dada ao tema da imagem de um país – como ela é criada e apresentada para o público por diferentes mídias, tais como livros, notícias, filmes, documentários, plataformas de compartilhamento de vídeos e postagens individuais em blogs ou vlogs. Para desenvolver a ideia nesta tese, foi feita uma escolha pela literatura policial, gênero de grande alcance entre o público em geral desde o seu surgimento em meados do século XIX, mas ainda pouco estudado no Brasil. Mais especificamente, concentramo-nos no crime contra a arte; o corpus de pesquisa é composto por cinco narrativas de ficção, publicadas nos últimos vinte e cinco anos, em que figurem quadros do pintor italiano barroco Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. Também apresentamos algumas considerações sobre o gênero policial, mostrando um pouco do desenvolvimento da visão desde os primeiros teóricos até alguns dos mais recentes, abrangendo o século XX. A base teórica para a análise das obras ficcionais se baseia em argumentos de Harari (2014) e Moscovici (2013), além de estudos sobre Caravaggio, sua posição na sociedade romana do século XVI/XVII e como sua produção artística é vista em nossos tempos.

The idea of identity–individual identity–has been widely discussed by students and researchers in many academic texts and books in the past decades. However, scant attention has been paid to the issue of the idea of a country–how it is created and presented to the public through different media, such as books, news reports, films, documentaries, video sharing websites, and individual posts in blogs or vlogs. In order to develop the idea in this thesis, our choice fell on detective novels, a genre that has been consistently favoured by the public since its beginnings in the middle of the 19th century, even though there are not many studies about the subject in Brazil. More specifically, we have focused on art crime; the research corpus is based on five fictional novels published in the past twenty-five years having as their motive paintings by the Baroque Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. We also present some thoughts about the detective novel genre, showing how it has been regarded from the first to the more recent theorists, encompassing the whole 20^th century. A theoretical basis for our analysis of the fictional works was established with arguments discussed by Harari (2014) and Moscovici (2013), besides studies about Caravaggio, his position in Roman 16^th century society and how his artistic output is held in our days.
