Em 1923, nos primeiros anos da República de Weimar, ocorre em Berlim, no bairro de Scheunenviertel, um enorme ataque antissemita. No contexto da hiperinflação alemã, o nazismo dava seus primeiros sinais de vida. O médico e escritor alemão judeu Alfred Döblin, logo após esse ataque, participa de uma reunião com sionistas de Berlim, onde são discutidas medidas em resposta ao crescente antissemitismo na Alemanha. Ele recebe então a proposta de uma viagem à Palestina. Apesar de recusar a proposta, ele acaba por se interessar em conhecer o judaísmo tradicional, que ainda se preservava nos enclaves judaicos da Polônia. Em 1924, ele empreende então uma viagem à Polônia. Seu livro Reise in Polen [Viagem à Polônia] é um relato minucioso dessa viagem e das comunidades judaicas que ele encontrou por lá. O autor descreve um enorme estranhamento, repudiando muitos dos hábitos tradicionais. Ao mesmo tempo, a experiência o leva a uma reflexão sobre seus antepassados e sobre o judaísmo que praticamente se apagara na sua família por conta da emancipação. O presente trabalho pretende discutir o judaísmo tradicional e emancipado através da análise dessa obra literária, cotejando os textos de Döblin sobre judaísmo, seus Escritos Autobiográficos e textos de outros autores, levando em conta o contexto do entreguerras na Polônia e Alemanha e os movimentos judaicos da época.

In 1923, in the early years of the Weimar Republic, a huge antisemitic attack took place in Berlin, in the Scheunenviertel district. In the context of German hyperinflation, Nazism was giving its first signs of life. The Jewish German physician and writer Alfred Döblin, shortly after this attack, attends a meeting with Zionists in Berlin, where measures in response to the growing antisemitism in Germany are discussed. He is then offered a trip to Palestine. Despite refusing the proposal, he ends up being interested in getting to know traditional Judaism, which is still preserved in the Jewish enclaves of Poland. In 1924, he undertook a trip to Poland. His book Reise in Polen is a thorough account of this journey and the Jewish communities he encountered there. The author describes an enormous estrangement, repudiating many of the traditional habits. At the same time, the experience leads him to a reflection on his ancestors and on Judaism, which had practically faded in his family because of emancipation. The present work intends to discuss traditional and emancipated Judaism through the analysis of this literary work, comparing Döblin's texts on Judaism, his Autobiographical Writings and texts of other authors considering the context of the interwar in Poland and Germany and the Jewish movements of the time.
