A cidade de São Paulo convive com um problema na área da moradia que revela a contradição existente entre a riqueza de uma grande metrópole e suas mazelas sociais. No centro dessa cidade existe cerca de uma centena de edifícios que ficaram vazios e sem uso, por problemas variados. E existem milhares de pessoas que vivem ou trabalham no centro, mas que não têm moradia. Esta pesquisa entrevistou moradores que ocuparam alguns desses edifícios, analisou as causas do abandono de prédios, as experiências exitosas do movimento social de moradia na gestão de ocupações, as políticas públicas de habitação popular no Brasil, exemplos bem sucedidos de moradia social e apontou as soluções jurídicas e administrativas passíveis de serem adotadas imediatamente. Com este estudo vislumbram-se possiblidades de tornar a cidade mais sustentável, mais justa, mais humana e bela no sentido da simbiose cidade-cidadão.

São Paulo city has been facing housing questions that reveals the contradiction between the wealth of a great metropolis and it's social ailments. In Downtown São Paulo, there's a hundred of empty and abandoned buildings which was disabled by different reasons. And thousands of citizens who live and work in the downtown city doesn't have a home. This research interviewed residents that had occupied some of those buildings and analyzed why this social abandoning happens. In addiction, this research has investigated successful experiences of social housing movements at the management of those occupancies, Brazil's housing public policies, successful examples of social housing and finally aiming legal and financial solutions capable to go forward immediately. This study glimpses possibilities of making the city more sustainable, fair, human and beautiful through the sense of a symbiosis between the city and its citizens.
