No contexto das transformações políticas, econômicas e culturais na sociedade portuguesa decorrentes da Revolução dos Cravos, o romance A Costa dos Murmúrios (1988), de Lídia Jorge, tematiza os últimos anos do Império Colonial Português em Moçambique, por meio de uma estrutura formal dupla. O confronto de duas narrativas distintas sobre a experiência de uma jovem metropolitana deslocada à cidade moçambicana da Beira, em razão de seu casamento com um alferes a serviço das tropas portuguesas nos últimos anos da guerra colonial, permite refletir sobre a presença portuguesa no continente africano, bem como sobre diferentes estratégias discursivas de representação daquele território no contexto histórico do pós-1974 em Portugal. Nesta perspectiva, este trabalho propõe uma análise comparativa das espacialidades construídas discursivamente em cada uma das narrativas que compõem o romance, com o objetivo de investigar a funcionalidade do elemento espacial na desconstrução do discurso hegemônico sobre a guerra colonial e o projeto imperial português. Inicialmente, articulamos as transformações na noção de espaço no Ocidente, conforme a sugestão de Michel Foucault (1984), à experiência histórica dos colonialismos europeus modernos, à luz do pensamento do sociólogo Boaventura de Sousa Santos. Em seguida, passamos à análise das duas narrativas, em três movimentos analíticos. Primeiro, investigamos a articulação estrutural do elemento espacial com as categorias de foco narrativo, personagem e ações, a partir de conceitos de Antonio Candido, Osman Lins e, sobretudo, Joseph Frank. Em seguida, recorremos à teoria dos gêneros, de Mikhail Bakhtin, para analisar as diferentes formas da articulação entre as categorias de espaço e tempo pelos dois narradores. Num terceiro movimento, acompanhamos os deslocamentos de Evita na cidade da Beira, à luz da distinção conceitual entre fronteira e limiar recomendada por Walter Benjamin, para investigar a realidade extratextual revelada no romance.

In the context of political, economic and cultural transformations in Portuguese society resulting from the Carnation Revolution, the novel The Murmuring Coast (1988), by Lídia Jorge, portrays the last years of the Portuguese Colonial Empire in Mozambique, by means of a double structure. The confrontation of two distinct narratives of the experience of a young metropolitan woman displaced to the Mozambican city of Beira, due to her marriage to a low-ranking officer in the Portuguese army during the last years of the colonial war, allows us to reflect about the Portuguese presence in the African continent, as well as on different discursive strategies of representation of that territory in the historical context of post-1974 in Portugal. In this perspective, this work proposes a comparative analysis of the discursively constructed spatialities in each of the narratives that structure the novel, aiming to investigate the functionality of the spatial element in the deconstruction of the official discourse about the colonial war and the Portuguese imperial project. Initially, we articulate the transformations in the western notion of space, as suggested by Michel Foucault (1984), to the historical experience of modern European colonialisms, in light of sociologist Boaventura de Sousa Santos' theories. Then we analyze the two narratives in three stages; first we investigate the articulation of the spatial element and other analytical categories such as narrative focus, characters and actions, based on Antonio Candido's, Osman Lins' and Joseph Frank's concepts. Next, we turn to Mikhail Bakhtin's theory of genres to analyze the different forms of articulation between space and time by the two narrators. In the third analytical part, we investigate the extratextual reality revealed in the novel by following Evita's movements in the city of Beira, in light of the conceptual distinction between frontiers and thresholds as suggested by Walter Benjamin.
