A presente pesquisa tem como interesse principal a proliferação de dispositivos ópticos ao longo do século XIX e sua relação com a narrativa escrita de ficção. A partir do estudo da prosa breve especificamente, do conto moderno e do exame de algumas das forças tecnológicas, históricas, sociais e culturais relacionadas à popularização de diversos instrumentos visuais, tentar-se-á investigar de que maneira tais imagens e instrumentos povoaram o imaginário e o cotidiano das sociedades europeia e estadunidense do período. Para tanto, a análise focará nos escritos ficcionais de autores oitocentistas para buscar compreender como a técnica informou suas formas de escrever sobre o olhar e como alguns de seus escritos sobre o olhar, por sua vez, anteciparam a técnica

This researchs primary interest is the proliferation of optical devices over the course of the nineteenth-century and their relationship with fictional written narratives. Starting from the study of the short prose form specifically the modern short story and from the examination of some of the technological, historical, social, and cultural forces related to the popularization of various visual instruments, we will try to investigate how such images and instruments populated the imagination and the everyday life of European and American societies of that time. For this purpose, this analysis will focus on the fictional writings of nineteenth-century authors to try to comprehend how the technique informed their ways of writing about the act of seeing and how some of their writings about seeing, in turn, predicted the technique
