Abstract in English
This master's thesis seeks, recovering the theoretical debate about the "late style", to present a close reading of the work Die Betrogene [The Black Swann] last novel published by Thomas Mann, in 1953, when its writer was almost eighty years old. "Late style" as an aesthetic concept is a notion that has been present in art theory since the reception of Renaissance works and has undergone several changes throughout the course of European social and cultural developments. Along this journey, "late style" finds a distinctive formulation through the work of Theodor W. Adorno, who modernized the concept after analyzing Beethoven's final compositions and reshaped it through the experiences of modernist art in the 20th century. Critical interpretations of Mann's oeuvre have raised the hypothesis of a "late style" emerging in the last years of his life, between 1947 and 1955. To investigate this hypothesis, a close reading of the novella was conducted, revealing Mann's innovative approach to dealing with literary tradition. Instead of a mere reaffirmation, which would suggest nostalgic resignation, the work recuperates, modulates, ironizes, and criticizes conventions, extracting from them historical significance. This "late style" approach seeks to rehabilitate literary themes such as Love, Disease, and Nature, which are characteristic of Romanticism, while simultaneously denouncing their anachronism in the "age of extremes." Being a realist writer, Mann's reconnection with Romanticism couldn't occur without irony. However, the "late style" destabilizes even this ironic denial, subsuming the tradition as a moment of the past, thereby rendering it relevant to the cultural critique of the present.
