Abstract in English
This dissertation focuses on the work of the American poet Wallace Stevens (1870 1955), specifically his poem "The Comedian as the Letter C," composed in 1921 and published in his first book Harmonium, in 1923. The first chapter of the dissertation is a presentation of Stevens, in which we sought to place him among his contemporaries and give a clear outline of his particularities as a poet, using critical commentary from the time of his debut and subsequent interpretations. From there, we carried out a detailed analysis with attention directed explicitly at the notions of space and landscape that it allows us to identify. Chapter 3 takes off from these notions to compose a broader picture of the poet's extraliterary influences and interlocutors, with a view to the specifically philosophical dimension of Stevens' work, in which essayistic writings and communications by the poet were approached in dialog with American thinkers that influenced him. In chapter 4, we highlight the complete translation we made of "The Comedian as the Letter C" into Portuguese, with comments that explain the theoretical orientation that guided us, the difficulties encountered, and the solutions finally adopted, followed by the translated poem beside the original in English. By approaching different strains of a multifaceted theoretical and critical problem, namely, landscape and poetic space in "The Comedian as the Letter C" and other later works by Stevens, we conclude that in his work, the senses of space are the starting point of a complex philosophy of perception, in which the mind and the world are in mutual permeability, revealing the concept of "participation" that we present as a theoretical contribution to this complex of relations
