Abstract in English
What could the books "A menina morta and Nedjma", two novels from such different countries, have in common? One possible answer is that the characters that give the title to these books lead the entire plot. Both relate, in some way, to secret circumstances found in the novels and derived from an oppressive background. This aspect guides us to make an analysis correlated to the formal structure of the novels. The plots of the novels take place in a time of transition. This is when the end of a social structure is not yet fully acknowledged or accepted by other characters. Before the arrival of a new era, anguish and hope, purified in the images of "A menina morta and Nedjma", affect the representation of the landscape in the novels. In fact, the landscape of the Grotão farm, located in the Paraíba river valley, and the city of Constantina, by distancing itself from a realistic representation, personifies elements of these contexts, responding to questions that pass through the filter of silencing. Therefore, the landscape brings up endemic issues to the formation of these young nations and to their relationship with the forbidden elements in this process. The narrative built from the confluence between the absence of characters and the representation of the landscape in the novels that seek to encompass the historical and social experience present in the Brazilian and Algerian literature.
