Abstract in English
This work examines the novel The cave [2000], by José Saramago, from an andresenian approach based on the key concepts "reino" ("kingdom") and "habitat" present in "Arte poética I", by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen. The first chapter provides a literature review of the novel, according to the main themes investigated about it and considering its conception process. The second chapter focuses on the "resistance communities" as a common literary procedure performed by Saramago. The theoretical framework is based upon the studies of Walter Benjamin [1936] on the authentic experience (Erfahrung), and the chapter analyzes how this value is fundamental for the reunion of characters of the Algor family against the threat of the "Center", the shopping mall that represents postmodernity in the narrative. The third chapter highlights the andresenian approach to the novel following the research model proposed by Gagliardi (2018), by associating two literary texts in which clay and the symbology of this primordial element are central. The fourth chapter brings the late-century novel closer to two short stories from Saramago's Objecto quase [1978], based on the idea of "time of refusal", which encompasses the complexity of the relationship between the subjects of the narratives and their historical present. In the final chapter, the notion habitat is associated to the notion of "consumer fascism", present in Pier Paolo Pasolini's corsair critique, to investigate the political, social and economic mechanisms portrayed in The cave.
