Abstract in English
This dissertation investigates the presence of manuscripts, namely diaries and letters, in the fiction of Machado de Assis. In his works , texts in the manuscripts form appear as it s origin or change it s direction, as occurs in almost ten of the short stories and novels. In s ome cases, the manuscripts act as a narrative device that operates in the relation between the action and the analysis of characters. In other cases, when they appear through the motif of the found manuscript, the manuscripts articulate the texts composition process and the narration, causing the metalinguistic dimension reverberates on the possibilities of understanding the meanings of the narrated subject. Moreover, in Machado's work, the fiction of the manuscript dialogues with the problem involving the private character of the discourse and its whether intentional or accidental publication. In this case, the manuscripts that participate in the staging of the p rints genesis are attributed to fictional authors, allowing the narratives to be constituted from partial points of view that re signify the understanding that one had of a certain character or of past events. Thus, diaries letters and old papers suggest divergent and competing versions of a given story: not by coincidence , from this set of fictions, the components of fidelity, doubt, interest, and self deception stand out in relation to the being with it self, to one's life marital relationship, to their friends, to society or to the country. In this way, the use made by Machado's fiction of textual genres commonly associated with manuscripts formalizes the tension between the manuscript and the printed through the dynamic between what one wishes to keep secret and what at a given moment is allowed to be revealed to society bringing out the idea that the appreciation of any fact or history is relative, that is, it depends on the condition of the observer and the express form used by one
