Abstract in English
The literature produced by Jorge Amado in the 1930s is admittedly marked by his political and ideological engagement. In addition to the project of social denunciation that marked several Brazilian writers in this period, the composition process of the author is guided by the formal assumptions of the so-called "proletarian literature", which brings his works closer to the production that is conventionally called "proletarian novel". Thus, the aim of this research is to verify to what extent these assumptions influenced the first works of the Bahian novelist - namely: Cacau, Suor and Jubiabá -, considering the possible limitations derived from an imported method and adjusted to the Brazilian reality, without losing sight of the impasses caused by the rigidity and schematism of the genre. In the formal procedure of these novels, the consortium of elements derived from aspects of the naturalist descriptive method, proletarian literature and popular literature appear as factors that structure the narratives, giving the representation of the social problems addressed a multifaceted character. The course of analysis and interpretation reveals that, between the fissures of the model and the idealized perspective of the author, the form captures, with variants, the contradictions of Brazilian society, also based on a failed process of modernization, thus engendering the revolt of men and women against subordination and exploitation.
