Vida e morte de M. J. Gonzaga de Sá

Abstract in English
The present work aims to analyze the novel Vida e Morte de M. J. Gonzaga de Sá, by Lima Barreto, based on the nuclear hypothesis that the characters Augusto Machado and Gonzaga de Sá, virtually biographer and biographee, figure divergences of historical perspectives in the face of life. The novel brings as background a context in which the recently established First Republic, in search of modernization of its city space, undertakes a violent urban reform, which, in turn, proves unable to incorporate the people to its conjunction. The work, published in 1919, brings as narrator Augusto Machado, a young civil servant who, after the death of Gonzaga de Sá, decides to write what would be his biography. Under the precept of parodic biography, Lima Barreto, using to a great extent the historiographical discussions elucidated by Nietzsche in his short essay about the usefulness of history for life, contrasts two divergent historical perspectives in the main characters
