Esta tese investiga a série de crônicas "A Semana", publicada por Machado de Assis na Gazeta de Notícias, entre abril de 1892 e fevereiro de 1897, considerando o diálogo estabelecido com a imprensa de seu tempo. Durante os quase cinco anos de existência da rubrica, o escritor recolheu sua matéria de discussão das distintas seções dos jornais do Rio de Janeiro, promovendo, sobretudo, fecundo diálogo com as crônicas de seus pares. Essa rede de cronistas se caracteriza por compor, através de procedimentos mais ou menos similares, um painel da sociedade brasileira nos inícios da República. Nesse sentido, a voz de "A Semana" se constitui em diálogo com as demais vozes da imprensa, produzindo importantes reflexões sobre a cena política; o sentido dos discursos; os interesses em competição na sociedade; o agendamento, o enquadramento e as posições encampadas pelos periódicos cariocas; além de problematizar o papel da imprensa no fomento ao debate público.

This dissertation investigates the "A Semana" chronicle series, published by Machado de Assis in the Gazeta de Notícias newspaper from April 1892 to February 1897, taking into consideration the dialogue engaged with the press at the end of the 19th-century ending. During the almost five years of this section, the writer selected his topics of discussion from the different newspapers' sections in Rio de Janeiro and promoted a fruitful dialogue with the other chroniclers. This network of chroniclers is defined by composing, through procedures relatively comparable, a panel of Brazilian society at the beginning of the Republic. In this way, the narrator of "A Semana" is constituted by the dialogue with the voices of the press, reflecting on the political scene; the meaning of discourses; the dispute over individual interests; the agenda setting, the framing and the political stances taken up by the newspapers on Rio de Janeiro; besides discussing how the press fosters public debate.
