A partir dos desdobramentos do movimento LGBTQIA+ contemporâneo que aconteceram ao final da década de 1960, tendo Stonewall como marco principal, houve uma transformação no que se entende até hoje por identidade gay. Desde então, diversas obras tentaram dar conta da realidade na proposta de uma literatura gay. Entre elas, Dancer from the Dance, de Andrew Holleran, publicada em 1978. Esta pesquisa se propõe a analisar de que forma o romance lida com as contradições de seu tempo histórico, sendo os aspectos analisados: a concepção de literatura gay e o direito da comunidade à expressão literária; a formação de uma identidade gay nos Estados Unidos; e o uso da estética camp como estratégia para lidar com as falhas de uma sociedade capitalista que vê na masculinidade heterossexual o seu ideal valor. Os fundamentos teóricos, essencialmente, são trânsitos entre os Estudos Culturais e os Estudos Queer, com destaque para os trabalhos de Alan Sinfield, David Halperin, Kevin Floyd e Les Brookes

The contemporary LGBTQIA+ movement had as a turning point the events of the late sixties, being the Stonewall riots certainly a landmark, leading to what we understand up to this day as gay identity. Since then, several literary pieces have attempted to grasp the reality concealed in what is called gay literature. Among such works, it is Dancer from the Dance, a novel written by Andrew Holleran and published in 1978. This dissertation aims to analyze how the novel deals with the contradictions of its time, mainly focusing on: the conception of gay literature and the community's right to literary expression; the formation of a gay identity in the United States; the use of camp aesthetics as a strategy for dealing with the faultlines of capitalist society, which sees in heterosexual masculinity its ideal value. The theoretical background includes works of Cultural Studies and Queer Studies as its main influence, namely the works of Alan Sinfield, David Halperin, Kevin Floyd, Les Brookes, among others
