The objective of this dissertation is to carry out a detailed reading of Ask the Dust, a novel by American writer John Fante, aiming at verifying the ways in which some aspects of U.S. social history in the first half of the 20th century specifically the context of the Great Depression are represented in the compositional elements of this novel namely, in the formal instances of the narrator, the characters and their relationships and in the spatial setting
