No final do século XIX, diferentes grupos sociais da cidade de São Paulo se reuniram em sociedades recreativas dançantes, cuja intenção primeira era a promoção de bailes privados aos sócios e sócias que delas faziam parte. Essa dissertação trata de investigar os espaços de sociabilização criados pelas classes populares, a exemplo das elites, e como a música e as danças do período sofreram influência circular. Os sons das ruas se misturaram com os dos salões e ritmos estrangeiros começavam a ganhar "sotaques" brasileiros mais fortes. Muitos foram os críticos que condenaram os bailes e as danças, e o debate se seguiu na esfera pública, sem que a música, no entanto, parasse. Aos poucos, os hábitos sociais foram se modificando, ao passo que a moral pública tentava estabelecer padrões a serem seguidos, e os gostos e os vocabulários dos bailes se adequavam aos novos princípios. Com o avançar das primeiras décadas do século XX, o poder público se mexia para implementar regras que organizassem as novas associações que proliferavam. A cidade de São Paulo também crescia em velocidade rápida e foi preciso muito ritmo para acompanhar todas essas transformações.

At the end of the 19th century, different social groups in the city of São Paulo gathered in dancing recreational societies, whose primary intention was to promote private balls for their members. This study investigates the spaces for socialization created by the popular classes and how the music and dances of the period suffered a circular influence. The sounds of the streets being mixed with those of the salons and foreign rhythms began to gain stronger Brazilian accents. Many were the critics who condemned the balls and dances. While the debate ensued in the public sphere, the music didn't stop. Gradually, social habits changed, morals standards were established, and the style and vocabulary of dances adapted to the new principles. With the advance of the first decades of the 20th century, the public power implemented rules to organize the new associations that did not stop emerging. There was an attempt to impose behavioral norms on the participants of these festivities. The city of São Paulo was also growing fast and it was necessary to have tempo to keep up with all these transformations.
