Abstract in English
This thesis discusses the stigma suffered by elderly people between 1889 and 1940, when various rejuvenating processes were reported in the Brazilian press, providing a possibility of regaining youth through opotherapy and other procedures which were diversified over time. Testicular injections, diets based on specific products, vasoligation surgeries, glandular grafts and paraffin injections were some of the widespread treatments before the development of plastic surgery. Documents found in periodicals, theses and books reveal how doctors and the society in general increased the esthetical pressure on both women and men, especially concerning the negative stereotype associated with oldness, ugliness as well as physical and mental decline at this stage of life. The research starts investigating 1889, when the French physiologist Edouard Brown-Séquard (1817-1894) announced that he had discovered a rejuvenation treatment using injections containing a substance made through the trituration of dog and Guinea pig testicles. It finishes in 1940, when synthetic substances such as progesterone and estradiol were already produced in laboratories and when aesthetic plastic surgery was recognized as a medical specialty in Brazil, after the effort of pioneer surgeons in this medical field.
