O objetivo dessa pesquisa é, através de um diálogo entre História e Literatura, analisar como a narrativa policial estadunidense, denominada hard-boiled, retratou a criminalidade nas cidades da costa oeste na década de 1920, durante a vigência da Lei Seca. Para esta dissertação, serão analisados seis contos do escritor Dashiell Hammett publicados na revista especializada em literatura policial: Black Mask. Este escritor buscou dotar a atividade de investigação do detetive com maior realismo, separando seus personagens dos detetives cerebrais criados por Athur Conan Doyle e Agatha Christie. Associado a uma agência de detetives, o agente privado era profissional e por isso entrelaçava seu trabalho à quantia que receberia com a solução dos casos. Além disso, ele tinha um comportamento duro e violento. O que fazia com que os casos, parcialmente solucionados, fossem reflexos de uma sociedade irracionalmente violenta e corrupta. Através da análise desses contos, permitiu elucidar a percepção que Hammett que tinha da sociedade estadunidense. Ou a que ele colocou em seus personagens. Assim, esta tese foi organizada levando-se em conta a constituição dele como escritor baseada em suas vivências como detetive da Agência Pinkerton e como elas lhe deram subsídios para renovar as histórias de detetive. As cidades, tanto reais quanto ficcionais, também se configuram como personagens da narrativa policial, sendo indutoras da criminalidade. Além de expor, através da violência excessiva, as ambiguidades da sociedade burguesa e o fetiche do capital. Tudo isso potencializado pela moralidade imposta pela Lei Seca que fez com que surgisse comportamentos desviantes entre os jovens e as mulheres. O hard-boiled, através do detetive, tornou-se o cronista desse submundo.

The objective of this research is, through a dialogue between History and Literature, to analyze how the American police narrative, called hard-boiled, portrayed crime in the cities of the west coast in the 1920s, during the Prohibition Law. For this dissertation, will be analyzed six stories by the writer Dashiell Hammett published in the magazine specialized in police literature: Black Mask. This writer sought to endow the investigative activity of the detective with greater realism, separating his characters from the brain detectives created by Athur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. Associated with a detective agency, the private agent was a professional and for that reason he linked his work to the amount he would receive with the solution of the cases. In addition, he behaved harshly and violently. Which meant that the cases, partially solved, were reflections of an irrationally violent and corrupt society. Through the analysis of these tales, it allowed to elucidate Hammett's perception of American society. Or the one he put in his characters. Thus, this thesis was organized taking into account his constitution as a writer based on his experiences as a detective at the Pinkerton Agency and how they gave him subsidies to renew the detective stories. Cities, both real and fictional, are also characters in the police narrative, inducing crime. In addition to exposing, through excessive violence, the ambiguities of bourgeois society and the fetish of capital. All of this was enhanced by the morality imposed by the Prohibition that caused deviant behaviors to arise among young people and women. The hard-boiled, through the detective, became the chronicler of this underworld.
