A presente pesquisa objetiva estudar as relações de pintores retratistas com a cidade de São Paulo entre 1859 e 1912. Através da pesquisa sobre as trajetórias de artistas que compuseram obras para a antiga Galeria de Retratos do Salão Nobre da Faculdade de Direito de São Paulo e foram ativos na cidade, procuramos reconstruir as relações entre suas práticas artísticas e o meio urbano, através da identificação de seus locais de trabalho, de exposição e de sociabilidade. Investigando o cotidiano dessas práticas, as principais fontes foram os periódicos do período, pesquisados a partir de indicações do método onomástico delineado por Calor Ginzburg, seguindo tanto os artistas como seus locais de exposição pela documentação ao longo do recorte delimitado. Inseridos na linha da Cultura Material dedicada aos estudos da cultura visual, privilegiamos as exposições das obras, realizadas em lojas, associações e outros estabelecimentos no Triângulo Histórico da cidade, como prática essencial para se entender como obra, artista, local e público se articulavam. A Faculdade de Direito, seus alunos e professores integram-se a essas dinâmicas enquanto consumidores, colaboradores e incentivadores de práticas artísticas e culturais diversas nas quais tais artistas se envolveram na cidade de São Paulo. O retrato também tem destaque como elo revelador de relações interpessoais, escolhas profissionais dos artistas e como mote de exposições. Verifica-se ao longo do recorte o processo mútuo de especialização profissional dos artistas, dos locais de exposição e do próprio espaço urbano da região central, como área de comércio e socibilidade elegante, diferenciado das vias a seu redor e dos bairros que iam sendo formados.

This research aims to identify the relations between portrait painter and the city of São Paulo between 1859 and 1912. By investigating the career trajectories of artists who painted works for the Portrait Gallery of the Law School of São Paulo and were active in the city, we aim to reconstruct those relations by identifying their places of work, exhibition, and sociability. Because we are looking at the daily aspect of their practices, the main sources for this work were newspapers and magazines from the period we are studying, adhering to the onomastic method as outlined by Carlo Ginsburg, by which we used the names of the artists as well as their places of exhibition to work through the sources. In line with Material Culture studies dedicated to visual culture, we chose the exhibitions, that took place in stores, societies, and other establishments in the Triângulo Histórico in São Paulo, as the practice by which we could best understand how the works, artists, places and public interreacted. The Law School, its students, and professors were part of this dynamics as consumers, contributors, and supporters of the many artistic and cultural practices in which the artists got involved. Portraits were also a point of interest as an object that could reveal links among people, aspects of the professional choices of the artists and as the motive for many of the exhibitions. We could assess that along this period there is a mutual process of specialization of the artists, places of exhibition, and of the city's downtown itself into a place of commercialization of fine goods and elegant sociability, differentiated from the streets around it and from the new neighborhoods that were emerging during this time.
