Abstract in English
The present thesis intends to show how the occupation of rural and suburban areas in the city of São Paulo occurred between the mid-nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century, having as a starting point a case study: the Jaguaré neighborhood. Present in some eighteenth-century Portuguese maps, the region presents records of occupation and agropastoral production since the colonial period when roads that connected São Paulo with the South and Mato Grosso were established and converted into area for cattle movement whose destination was the main economic centers of the time. The modernization processes experienced in São Paulo presented a unique aspect in the region, which became an industrial center for meat processing with the establishment of a large slaughterhouse in the first decades of the twentieth century. This area was one of the pioneering in receiving electricity generated by Light Company. It also suffered a remarkable landscape and climate impact from the straightening of the Pinheiros River, as well as being the focus of urbanization processes in the first half of the twentieth century. The persistence of rural and urban characteristics during a considerable part of the period covered by the research, makes the region a privileged field for the study of the coexistence of different temporalities in the municipality
