O presente trabalho de pesquisa tem por objetivo analisar os livros Pela Verdade (1925, 694 páginas) e Pela Verdade - Discursos e artigos em defesa de um livro (1926, 376 páginas) publicados pelo advogado paraibano Epitácio Pessoa algum tempo depois de encerrado seu mandato de presidente do Brasil (1919-1922). O período em que Pessoa governou o Brasil foi caracterizado por turbulências nos campos econômico, político e social. Por essa razão, em Pela Verdade, Epitácio Pessoa apresenta a defesa de si e de seu governo, dizendo-se vítima de calúnias que vinha sofrendo da mídia e de opositores. Os livros, documentos da cultura política da época, configuram-se, portanto, como relatos de memórias que figura nas relações de saber e de poder. Por essa razão, a nossa pretensão foi identificar no livro as representações dos conflitos, dos contextos políticos, econômicos e sociais, de modo a apreender as particularidades do período em que Epitácio Pessoa governou o Brasil. Finalmente, essas premissas permitem lançar novas luzes às especificidades de um período comumente tratado como parte de um todo homogêneo (a "República Velha"), de modo que o presente trabalho percebe esse período como um "estado de transição", localizando Epitácio Pessoa e a tradição do epitacismo por meio do próprio sujeito e em suas relações políticas, preocupado com sua reputação e engajado em deixar sua "verdade" dos fatos.

This research work aims to analyze the books Pela Verdade (1925, 694 pages) and Pela Verdade - Discursos e artigos em defesa de um livro (1926, 376 pages) published by the lawyer Epitácio Pessoa some time after his mandate ended as president of Brazil (1919-1922). The period in which Pessoa governed Brazil was characterized by turmoil in the economic, political and social fields. For this reason, in Pela Verdade, Epitácio Pessoa presents the defense of himself and his government, claiming to be the victim of slander that he had been suffering from the media and opponents. The books are configured as reports of memories that figure in the relations of knowledge and power. For this reason, we intended to identify in the book the representations of conflicts, political, economic and social contexts, in order to apprehend the particularities of the period in which Epitácio Pessoa governed Brazil. Finally, these assumptions make it possible to shed new light on the specificities of a period commonly treated as part of a homogeneous whole (the "Old Republic"/"Velha República"), so that the present work perceives this period as a "state of transition", locating Epitácio Pessoa and the tradition of epitheism through the subject himself and in his political relations, concerned with his reputation and engaged in leaving his "truth" of facts.
