Esta dissertação tem por objetivo refletir geograficamente sobre as contradições nas relações e processos atuais do uso do território de Sobral - CE e a partir das suas peculiaridades, compreender sua formação territorial e seu planejamento urbano. O método de pesquisa procura elucidar como se expandiu e transformou o uso do território da cidade, suas sucessivas e dinâmicas transformações e as desigualdades socioespaciais por elas produzidas, trazendo consigo a necessidade de planejamento. Ao longo da sua história Sobral vai tendo seu território preparado para o uso de fluxos e fixos de modo a incorporar, por exemplo, a atividade de grandes empresas, comercio e serviços. No entanto, contraditoriamente, há o crescimento de uma periferia pobre na cidade, o aumento do trabalho informal e o surgimento da violência. O método de pesquisa, para dar conta do movimento da totalidade na dinâmica do uso do território da cidade utiliza o geoprocessamento, ferramenta de representação importante do trabalho geográfico. A conclusão da pesquisa é que no território se manifesta, solidariamente, todo tipo de uso que caracteriza o atual período histórico denominado de técnico, científico e informacional. Difícil entender a sociedade nesse período da História sem considerar o território usado como uma categoria de análise social. Nesta dissertação o conhecimento da formação territorial é feito através da compreensão do seu processo de planejamento e do uso do território.

This dissertation aims to reflect geographically on the contradictions in relationships, processes of land use of Sobral - CE and from its peculiarities, to understand their formation and their territorial planning. The research method elucidates how has expanded and made the use of the territory of the city, its subsequent dynamics changes and spatial inequalities they produced, bringing the need for planning. Throughout its history Sobral has prepared the territory for the use of fixtures (fixed objects) and flows to incorporate, for example, the activity of large companies, businesses and Services. However, paradoxically, there is the growth of a poor suburb in the city, the increase in informal employment and the emergence of violence. The research method, to account for the movement of all the dynamics of land use GIS - Geographical Information Systems - was used, a tool for representation of the geographic work. The research conclusion is that the territory manifests itself, jointly, all kinds of use that characterizes the current historical period called the technical, scientific and informational. It is hard to understand the society in that period of history without considering the territory used as a category of social analysis.
