Esta pesquisa pretende o entendimento do Instituto Moreira Salles, instituição cultural fundada em 1992, com atividades de repercussão no Brasil, reconhecidas atualmente em torno dos temas da memória e da imagem. Sobretudo, a investigação toma o objeto como unidade de análise privilegiada para a compreensão do mecenato privado ocorrido no país nas últimas décadas, especialmente aquele realizado por elites empresariais dedicadas à filantropia em instituições culturais de ambição pública. Para tanto, reconstituo o desenvolvimento da agenda cultural consolidada no Instituto Moreira Salles, partir da análise dos vastos investimentos institucionais na produção de arquitetura, editoração, fotografia, literatura, iconografia, música, ensaísmo e educação, considerando a relevância da conjuntura política favorável ao mecenato privado, as disposições particulares dos mecenas e a colaboração que receberam de inúmeros intelectuais e produtores culturais, em trinta anos de existência. Entre as principais conclusões da tese, defendo como essa instituição está inserida no conjunto de empreendimentos culturais e empresariais com o singular protagonismo da família Moreira Salles, erigido muito antes, o qual mantém constante diálogo, trânsito de funcionários e de ideias e variadas similitudes. Por fim, observo-a enquanto manifestação significativa de dois fenômenos sociais mais amplos, explorados na argumentação, a saber; a consolidação de práticas de burocratização do mecenato privado tradicional e a legitimação da representação pública da família Moreira Salles, como elite propriamente interessada no patrimônio e na transformação do país.

This research intends to understand Instituto Moreira Salles, a cultural institution founded in 1992, with repercussion activities in Brazil, currently recognized around the themes of memory and image. Above all, the investigation takes the object as a privileged unit of analysis for understanding the private patronage that has occurred in the country in recent decades, especially that carried out by business elites dedicated to philanthropy in cultural institutions of public ambition. To this end, I reconstitute the development of the consolidated cultural agenda at Instituto Moreira Salles, based on the analysis of the vast institutional investments in the production of architecture, publishing, photography, literature, iconography, music, essays and education, considering the relevance of the political situation favorable to patronage private sector, the particular dispositions of the patrons and the collaboration they received from countless intellectuals and cultural producers, in thirty years of existence. Among the main conclusions of the thesis, I defend how this institution is inserted in the set of cultural and business enterprises with the unique role of the Moreira Salles family, erected much earlier, which it maintains constant dialogue, transit of employees and ideas and varied similarities. Finally, I observe it as a significant manifestation of two broader social phenomena, explored in the argument, namely; the consolidation of bureaucratization practices of traditional private patronage and the legitimization of the public representation of the Moreira Salles family, as an elite that is properly interested in the heritage and transformation of the country.
