Esta tese trata a compreensão das estruturas de poder e negociações observadas na organização urbana, na produção, na circulação e na iconografia monetária das cunhagens de duas cidades da Judaea-Palaestina (Jerusalém/Aelia Capitolina e Cesareia Marítima) entre os séculos I AEC e II EC, para a compreensão dos aspectos relacionados à negociação local diante da fundação/refundação dessas cidades por Roma, considerados cruciais para o entendimento dos possíveis padrões de interações político-administrativa, sociocultural e religiosa do Império Romano com as elites locais. O discurso de poder representado nas moedas e na organização do espaço urbano relaciona-se ao elemento legitimador da presença romana na Judaea-Palaestina, por isso, as análises desta pesquisa apoiam-se nas epistemologias históricas, arqueológicas e numismáticas existentes, para a verificação da intencionalidade persuasiva observável no registro arqueológico, associada ao contexto sociocultural dos séculos I AEC ao II EC na região. Assim, para a compreensão dos questionamentos desta tese, faz-se necessário a reflexão da cultura material (moeda e espaço urbano) e suas representações (estruturas de poder e negociações), a saber i) Qual o impacto da presença romana nas cidades Jerusalém/Aelia Capitolina e Cesareia Marítima observado em dois veículos oficiais do Estado: a moeda e a malha urbana? ii) Qual a contribuição da amoedação e da fundação/refundação dessas duas cidades da província Judaea-Palaestina, para veiculação e legitimação do poder imperial na região, nos séculos I AEC ao II EC?

The present doctoral thesis examines the understanding of power structures and negotiations observed in urban organisation, production, circulation and iconography in the coinage of two cities in Judaea-Palaestina (Jerusalem/Aelia Capitolina and Caesarea Maritima) between the 1st century BCE and the 2nd century CE. Based on this archaeological analysis, we aim to understand aspects related to local negotiation towards the foundation/refoundation of these cities by Rome, deemed crucial to understand possible patterns of interaction political, administrative, sociocultural and religious between the Roman Empire and the local élites. The power discourse represented in the coins and in the organisation of the urban space is linked to the legitimising element of Roman presence in Judaea-Palaestina. For that reason, the analyses in this research are based on the existing historical, archaeological and numismatic epistemologies, in order to verify discernible persuasive intentionality in the archaeological record in the sociocultural context of that period in that region. It is therefore necessary to reflect upon material culture (coins and urban space) and their representations (power structures and negotiations) with the purpose of exploring two main questions: i) What impact of the Roman presence in the cities of Jerusalem/Aelia Capitolina and Caesarea Maritima can be observed in two official State channels: coins and urban network? And ii) What is the contribution of coinage and the foundation/refoundation of these two cities in the province of Judaea-Palaestina to the channelling and legitimisation of the imperial power in the region, from the 1st century BCE to the 2nd century CE?
