Abstract in English
This research analyzes the integration of the São Paulo countryside into the transnational Methodist missionary movement dynamized in the late 19th and the early 20th centuries. During this period, the religious institution built global connections through a network that was organized by the structures of communication and circulation from capitalist modernity (railways, steamships, telegraphs, postal services, presses, etc.). Different from the regional historiographical perspectives, this work analyzes how this infrastructure allowed the countryside of São Paulo to be connected to the broad framework of simultaneities of the educational projects organized by missionaries that circulated transnationally. The research is based on periodicals published by the missionaries and official reports of the Church containing several religious and pedagogics records.
