Temporality and dishonest behavior: relationships between reward interval and report interval with cheating

Abstract in English
The relationship between temporality and dishonest behavior has been the subject of recent research in behavioral economics. However, few articles have evaluated the role of the interval between a task and its reward and the role of the interval between the task and the reporting of its outcome on cheating. The first objective of the research was to assess whether participants who were to receive a reward for a dicerolling task "immediately", "1 week" or "2 weeks" after the task exhibited the same dishonest behavior between themselves. Only in the first round of dice rolls was cheating observed in the "immediate reward" and "1 week reward" groups, but not in the "2 weeks reward" group. The second objective was to assess whether participants who were supposed to report the outcome of a dice-rolling task "immediately", "1 week" or "2 weeks" after the task exhibited the same dishonest behavior between themselves. No statistical difference was observed between groups. However, a statistical difference was observed in the distribution of reports that were made 2 weeks after the task. This research discusses how the preference for immediate rewards may be related to the concept of intertemporal discounting and how the distance between the task and the reporting of its result may be associated with ethical dissonance. The research encourages the use of online dicerolling task and it is suggested that future projects expand the time intervals between rewards and experimental tasks.
