Abstract in English
Muscular temporomandibular disorders are a group of changes in the muscles of the face, joints and associated structures, with a high incidence in the population, which directly affect the function of the stomatognathic system. The aim of this study was to evaluate, before and after seven days of using the dry needling technique in the masseter muscles, the stomatognathic system of individuals with muscle temporomandibular disorder. 21 individuals participated in this research, aged between 21 and 60 years, of both genders. Needling was performed at the trigger points of the masseters using a systemic acupuncture needle and mandrel. The effectiveness of dry needling therapy for pain was analyzed using the Visual Numerical Scale; mandibular mobility using digital caliper, facial temperature using infrared thermography, efficiency of masticatory cycles through surface electromyography and distribution of occlusal strength using the T-Scan® III Occlusal Analysis System. The data were submitted to statistical analysis using the GraphPad Prism 6.0 software (p≤0.05). The results showed a decrease in pain (p≤0.05) and increased mobility in the right (p = 0.028) and left (p = 0.022) sides. In the thermographic and masticatory efficiency analysis, no statistical difference was observed. In the analysis with T-Scan® III, an increase in left occlusal strength was observed (p = 0.001) indicating a homeostasis in the distribution of this force after the application of dry needling. It can be concluded that the dry needling technique was effective for improving pain and for the functional performance of the stomatognathic system in individuals with temporomandibular muscle dysfunction.
