Liberdade

Abstract in English
The main objective of this thesis is to present an investigation regarding the philosopher Jean- Jacques Rousseau's philosophical-educational concepts, contained in Emile or On Education, a philosophical and educational treatise wrote in the 18th century. The starting point is the Discourse on the Origin and Basis of Inequality Among Men (1755). It is in that text that the philosopher presents freedom, a fundamentally human capacity that, combined with perfectibility, is what sets humans apart from other animals, enabling us to become the authors and protagonists of our lives. These analysis aim to clarify how the education proposed by the philosopher, in Emile, has in that particular fundamental assumption of freedom its justification and development. In other words, our intention is to understand Rousseau's philosophical-educational concepts, contained in Emile, bearing in mind that freedom is the capacity that the philosopher himself chooses as the guiding principle to think about human development and, therefore, to establish his educational proposal.
