Abstract in English
The Individual Meaning Centered-Psychotherapy for Patients with Advanced Cancer is a modality of individual, brief, semi-structured and psychoeducational psychotherapy. It was developed to provide specific care for people who are suffering from a progressive, irreversible oncological disease that threatens the maintenance of life. It is a qualitative research in the form of case study; its objective was to evaluate the effects of this intervention applied in two Brazilian patients. The specific objectives were to measure and evaluate the symptoms of anxiety, symptoms of depression and distress; to evaluate the sustaining of a sense of life in the context of the diseases and chances in coping through the intervention. To measure the symptoms of anxiety, depression and distress, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and The Distress Thermometer were used. The results corroborate the literature, which suggests that the application of Individual Meaning Centered-Psychotherapy contributes to the reduction of anxious and depressive symptoms, levels of anguish and maintenance of a sense of hope, purpose and meaning in life, helping the patient to better deal with the challenges inherent in facing death and dying. Carrying out new research with an increased number of participants is of fundamental importance for the area.
