Apesar da ampla utilização dos testes projetivos, sua fundamentação teórica ainda não está satisfatoriamente consolidada. O presente estudo teve como objetivo: realizar uma discussão filosófica e epistemológica das técnicas projetivas; apresentar uma possível fundamentação por meio de uma teoria baseada no simbolismo; identificar elementos que pressupõe tal teoria, mas que não a explicitam devido à insuficiência conceitual; mostrar como a teoria pode ser articulada com os elementos encontrados; formular conceitos mais objetivos dos que os utilizados na literatura atualmente. Para isso, foi apresentada a teoria simbólica de Susanne K. Langer como possibilidade de fundamentação das técnicas projetivas. Como exemplo destas, foram selecionados o Teste de Rorschach e o Teste de Apercepção Temática (T.A.T.), dos quais se realizou uma revisão de literatura, a fim de identificar elementos simbólicos em seus respectivos históricos, fundamentações teóricas, técnicas e interpretações. Finalmente, buscou-se uma articulação entre a teoria simbólica e os elementos encontrados. Os resultados mostram que a teoria de Susanne K. Langer é uma alternativa para a fundamentação filosófica das técnicas projetivas e que ela pode abrir caminho para realização de novos estudos na área

Despite the widespread use of projective tests, their theoretical foundation is not well established yet. The present study aims at: promoting a philosophical and epistemological discussion about projective techniques; presenting a possible foundation by using a symbolism-based theory; identifying elements that imply such theory, but not make it explicit due to conceptual insufficiency; formulating more objective concepts than those currently in use in the literature. In order to achieve this, Susanne K. Langers symbolic theory was presented as a possible foundation of projective techniques. The Rorschach test and the Thematic Apperception Test (T.A.T.) were selected as examples and a revision of literature was made to identify symbolic elements in their respective histories, theoretical foundations, techniques and interpretations. Finally, an attempt was made to articulate the symbolic theory and the elements found. The results show that Susanne K. Langers symbolic theory is an alternative to the philosophical foundation of projective techniques and that it may open the way for new studies in the field
