Abstract in English
This research aims to analyze chronicles from Paulo Mendes Campos published in Rio de Janeiro newspapers during the 1950s, posteriorly assembled in the novel O Cego de Ipanema (1960), as well as chronicles from José Lezama Lima published in the newspaper Diario de la Marina between 1940 and 1950, assembled in Tratados en la Habana (1958) afterwards. Our goal is to observe the cities Rio de Janeiro and Havana and their spaces and characters from the artists points of view: the represented images of the public and private spaces, the characters carioca (from Rio) and habanero (from Havana); the presence of the nature and the descriptions of the sea, in contrast to the urban rhythm. We also want to discuss the literary-journalistic gender chronicle and their diffusion in the Latin-American space, especially in Brazil and Cuba. The chronicle genre was defined as genuinely carioca and typically Brazilian by the Brazilian critics, as well as Caribbean by excellence in Hispanic America, therefore we intend to discuss the chronicle's regional identity and its deeply connection with the cities.
