Este trabalho apresenta um procedimento para análise da trajetória de equilíbrio do sistema baseado numa teoria não-linear geometricamente exata de barras prismáticas retas de seção transversal indeformável. Os resultados numéricos obtidos são comparados às cargas críticas deduzidas através de alguns métodos aproximados. Uma análise comparativa entre a teoria de Vlasov e a teoria não-linear geometricamente exata formulada por Pimenta, Yojo revelou discrepâncias que conduziram o Autor a propor a alteração da hipótese constitutiva desta última. Para a análise da estabilidade por distorção, os resultados decorrentes desta modificação foram incorporados ao programa de elementos finitos de Pimenta, Yojo. A expressão linearizada da segunda variação da energia potencial obtida após esta modificação e comparada a expressão obtida a partir da teoria de Vlasov. São apontadas as diferenças entre os termos geométricos e os termos constitutivos não-lineares de ambas.

Steel welded and cold-formed members have been extensively used in recent years for structures. In view of the usual section configurations and due to challenging architectural requirements, member instability is often a limiting design condition. One particular mode of buckling is characterized by simultaneous lateral deflection and distortion of the cross-section in its own plane. Existing methods are steadfast restricted to estimate critical loads, despite the little information available about post-buckling behaviour. This work presents a procedure to study the equilibrium path of the structure, using a geometrically non-linear theory of straight rods with indeformable cross section. Numerical examples are presented and compared with critical loads obtained from some existing methods. A compariosn between Vlasovs theory and Pimenta and Yojos gewometrically non-linear theory showed discrepancies that guided the writer to propose a change in the constitutive relations of the last one. For distortional instability analysis purposes, this change was incorporated to Pimenta, Yojo finite element program. Linearization of the second variation of the total potential energy after this chage is compared to that obtained from Vlasovs theory. The differences between both geometric and constitutive non-linear therms in the above mentioned theories are emphasized.
