Abstract in English
As the years went by and with the evolution of iron ore exploitation in Brazil and the world, the costs of mineral processing have increased significantly, e.g., costs with energy and consumption of metallic grinding media. The Quadrilátero Ferrífero plants, that processed compact hematite until the mid-40s, began to process friable itabirite and then compact itabirite. The compact itabirite has a relatively high silica grade, that increases even more the consumption of steel balls in its grinding process and have a direct effect in the process costs, which may even exceed those associated with electricity in industrial operations. The present work studied the viability of partially replacing the steel balls with pebbles that comes from previous stages of compact itabirite processing in the tubular mills grinding of iron ore processing, using a plant in the Quadrilátero Ferrífero as a case study. In that case, the mill charge would include coarse ore fragments (pebbles) and steel balls, thus operating with a mixed charge. Characterization tests with compact itabirite as a grinding media were carried out, in addition to bench-scale grinding tests in mills with diameters of 30 and 58 cm. The results indicate that the compact itabirite coarse particles have suitable characteristics to be used as a grinding media. The grinding tests showed that the replacement of 25% of balls by pebbles presents promising results, with a relatively small increase in energy costs and low consumption of the pebbles.
