Abstract in English
This dissertation sets out to investigate manifestations of realism in contemporary cinema, taking as its starting point the films The Act of Killing by Joshua Oppenheimer (The Act of Killing/Jagal, UK/Denmark/Norway/Indonesia, 2012) and Uncle Boonmee, Who Can Recall His Past Lives by Apichatpong Weerasethakul (Lung Bunmi Raluek Chat, Thailand/France/Germany/Spain, 2010). Our hypothesis is that these films combine a realist impulse with the dimension of trauma, which at the same time reinforces and attenuates their commitment to the everyday and historical real. Firstly, the aim is to analyse the relationship between realism and trauma based on the phantasmagoria conjured up in the diegesis of The Act of Killing. This phantasmagoria emerges from the filmic articulation engendered by Joshua Oppenheimer, his collaborators and characters, leading to the denunciation of the presence of ghosts of the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s in contemporary times. This will make it possible to draw a comparison and contrast with the film Uncle Boonmee, Who Can Recall His Past Lives, which, like The Act of Killing, has the presence of ghosts in its diegesis, pointing to a traumatic recent past in Thailand in the 1960s, still latent in the countrys daily experience. As we will suggest, both works make use of realist procedures, in Bazinian terms (documentary cinema, depth of field, long takes, non-professional actors, emphasis on contemporaneity and everyday life), and at the same time bring to light a traumatic recent past and its respective ghosts.
