Abstract in English
The present work seeks to trace a look in historical perspective, through immanent and also comparative analysis, on the documentaries Twenty Years Later (1984), Metalworkers (2004), Galileia Survivors (2013) and Elizabeth Teixeira's Family (2013), all by filmmaker Eduardo Coutinho, investigating the construction of collective memories and the trajectory of sectors of the working class in Brazil, through individual memories shaped by the passage of time and by the look of the documentary maker and the documentary cinema. In this path, we seek to compare Twenty Years Later and Metalworkers, investigating, through the filmic present, the space of experience that comprises the interregnum between the moment of action, in which individuals actively participated in boiling social movements, such the peasant movement in 1964 and the labor movement in the early 1980s, and the moment of memory, in which this past and the path to the present are elaborated, in Twenty Years Later in the 1980s and in Metalworkers on the eve of the second round of presidential elections of 2002. In both cases, a horizon of expectations about the future opens up at the end. Subsequently, with a view to Galileia Survivors and Elizabeth Texeira's Family, we investigate which future was made present in the face of personal and social expectations that were opened at the end of Twenty Years Later. In this track, there is a look at a 50-year cycle of characters, spaces, social movements, documentary cinema, documentary filmmakers and, ultimately, Brazilian society.
