O presente trabalho tem como objetivo principal analisar o cuidado com o corpo morto no município de Ribeirão Preto, desde o momento do óbito até o seu sepultamento. A necessidade de entender este cuidado surgiu frente a dificuldades do Serviço de Investigação, Coleta, Análise de Estatísticas Vitais (SICAEV) responsável pelos sistemas de informação de mortalidade (SIM) e nascidos vivos (SINASC), como também pela vigilância do óbito dentro da Secretaria de Saúde (SMS) de Ribeirão Preto, em dar resposta às inúmeras questões e demandas referentes ao manejo do corpo morto no município. Trata-se uma pesquisa documental, descritiva de abordagem qualitativa e o caminho metodológico se constituiu de revisão de literatura para amparar o referencial sobre o tema, estudo das legislações municipais, estaduais e federais sobre o assunto e análise de documentos obtidos nos acervos da Câmara Municipal de Ribeirão Preto, Arquivo Municipal e Cemitério da Saudade. Para a construção do fluxograma deste cuidado foram observadas as rotinas de trabalho de cada setor envolvido no manejo do corpo morto abordando todas as etapas do processo. Ao avaliar as legislações, estas mostram que a prestação do Serviço Funerário é considerada como de interesse público local e a sua normatização de competência municipal. Porém, a construção do fluxograma do caminho percorrido pelo corpo morto mostra a complexidade deste processo de cuidado e que compreende muito mais que o serviço funerário; abrange também a assistência ao óbito e o manejo de corpos não reclamados e não identificados que vêm a óbito no município. Não há uma legislação que abarque toda esta complexidade e com isto há uma lacuna que faz com que muitos municípios não se responsabilizem ou mesmo entendam seu papel na gestão deste cuidado. Conclui que o município de Ribeirão Preto apresenta problemas em todas as esferas deste cuidado devido à ausência da gestão municipal como protagonista e que será necessária uma reorganização por parte do município para que o corpo morto seja cuidado na sua integralidade, respeitando sua dignidade conforme previsto na Constituição Brasileira.

The main objective of this study is to analyze the care of the deceased body in the city of Ribeirão Preto, from the moment of death to its burial. The need to understand this care arose due to the difficulties of the Vital Statistics Investigation, Collection and Analysis Service (SICAEV), responsible for the mortality information systems (SIM) and live births (SINASC), as well as for death surveillance within the Health Department (SMS) of Ribeirão Preto, in responding to the numerous questions and demands related to the management of the dead body in the municipality. It is a documentary, descriptive research with a qualitative approach and the methodological path consisted of a literature review to support the reference on the subject, study of municipal, state and federal legislation on the subject and analysis of documents obtained from the collections of the City Council of Ribeirão Preto, Municipal Archive and Saudade Cemetery. For the construction of the flowchart of this care, the work routines of each sector involved in the management of the dead body were observed, addressing all stages of the process. When evaluating the legislations, they show that the provision of the Funeral Service is considered to be of local public interest and its standardization is a municipal competence. However, the construction of the flowchart of the path taken by the dead body shows the complexity of this care process, which encompasses much more than the funeral service; It also covers death assistance and the handling of unclaimed and unidentified bodies that die in the municipality. There is no legislation that encompasses all this complexity and with this there is a gap that means that many municipalities do not take responsibility or even understand their role in the management of this care. It concludes that the municipality of Ribeirão Preto presents problems in all spheres of this care due to the absence of municipal management as a protagonist and that a reorganization by the municipality will be necessary so that the dead body is cared for in its entirety, respecting its dignity as provided for in the Brazilian Constitution.
