Abstract in English
This thesis presents the history of the graphic renovation of Folha de S. Paulo between 1993 and 1996, a time when the newspaper was reaching record print runs. The graphic renovation was developed by designer Eliane Stephan, and included a new logo, typography, grid systems, graphic resources and the introduction of colors in the graphic design of the pages of the newspaper. All these aspects together helped to convey a new visual identity for Folha, which has been maintained for decades and is still present today. For the research that originated this thesis, oral history techniques were used to interview professionals involved in the creation and implementation of the graphic renovation process, who worked in various areas, bearing different points of view of the time. An analysis of 100 years of Folhas logos and of the resources created by Stephan for the graphic renovation were also used. The research carried out for this thesis reveals that Folha was quite committed to design, way more than it was usual at the time, which, in a subtle way, conducted the entire newsroom.
