Situada dentro de uma linha de pesquisa que estuda objetos configurados por não designers e com o objetivo de contribuir para a ampliação da visão do campo do design sobre essa produção popular, esta tese analisa e interpreta artefatos que se caracterizam por serem resultado do reuso e reciclagem de objetos de origem industrial e por surgirem em situações marcadas por precariedade econômica e crise social e material. Dois contextos são estudados: o Nordeste do Brasil nas décadas de 1950, 1960 e 1970; e Cuba, durante o Período Especial de Paz. A pesquisa aborda questões centrais, como as circunstâncias que deram origem aos artefatos, os processos pelos quais eles foram moldados, as razões de sua criação e seu significado cultural. Fontes de diferentes naturezas, como fotografias, romances e música, são usadas na análise dos artefatos e contextos, e a subjetividade e a sensibilidade pessoal são abraçadas em sua interpretação. A imaginação e a fabulação são usadas para formular novos significados estéticos e poéticos sobre a relação entre eles e as pessoas que os usam e configuram, considerando tanto suas qualidades práticas quanto sua relação com o ambiente circundante. Nas considerações finais destacase que os artefatos aqui analisados, além de úteis, são meios pelos quais as pessoas dão sentido ao seu mundo, bem como uma produção que cria novas possibilidades materiais e de vida.

In the framework of a line of research that studies objects configured by non-designers and with the aim of contributing to the broadening of the vision of the field of design on utilitarian objects of popular production, this thesis analyzes and interprets artifacts that are characterized by being the result of the reuse of utilitarian objects of industrial manufacture, and by emerging in situations marked by economic precariousness and social and material crisis. Two contexts are studied: the Northeast of Brazil in the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s; and Cuba, during the Special Period in Times of Peace. The research addresses central issues such as the circumstances that gave rise to the artifacts, the processes by which they were shaped, the reasons for their creation and their cultural significance. In the analysis of the artifacts and contexts, sources of different natures such as photographs, novels and music were used, and in their interpretation, subjectivity and personal sensibility are embraced. Imagination and fabulation are used to formulate new aesthetic and poetic meanings about the relationship between the artifacts and the people who use and configure them, considering both their practical qualities and their interaction with the surrounding environment. In the conclusions, it is emphasized that the artifacts analyzed here, in addition to being useful, are means by which people make sense of their world, as well as a production that creates new material and vital possibilities.
