Modern university campuses in Latin America: programme, place and identity

Abstract in English
University Campuses were one of the most important architec¬tural and urban developments that emerged from the period of progressive governments in Latin America between the 1930s and 1950s. Despite the influence from North America, where the concept of campuses was pioneered, the projects realised in Latin America took place within specific contexts and rep¬resent a significant expression of local modern architecture. Taking this as a premise and starting point, this dissertation proposes to look at the modernist University Campuses in Latin America and investigate the ways in which their construction happened almost simultaneously in Chile, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia, Panamá, Equator and Dominican Republic. It takes three campuses as case studies: the National University of Colombia, the National Autonomous University of Mexico, and the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. And three lines of inquiry and analysis in relation to programme, place and identity respectively.
