Abstract in English
This study runs through the relations between the cultural environment of São Paulo city and how people of some specific groups have wished to represent it, in the period of late XIX century and the 1920s. It brings also the mechanisms most likely responsible for such a cultural fabric: the places where exhibitions were used to happen; the then new Museu Paulista and Pinacoteca do Estado de São Paulo, the appearance of the first art galleries as well as an art market; the new behavior carried by a new way of life; the representations of the city in the literature in a rich universe of initiatives, events, institutions, places, and social agents, giving birth to distinct approaches regarding the very conception of a modern metropolis, all of them based on multitudinal relations.
