A questão central que orientou o presente trabalho foi a relação entre o modelo da Universidade de São Paulo e a sua expressão física: a Cidade Universitária. Esta tese demonstra que dois princípios essenciais da concepção da Universidade de São Paulo, a integração universitária e a convivência formadora do espírito universitário, não chegaram a se concretizar nos espaços da Cidade Universitária. O sentido da expressão "integração universitária" utilizada neste trabalho é o oposto da existência de faculdades isoladas e auto-suficientes, totalmente responsáveis pela formação de seus alunos e pelo gerenciamento de espaços e instalações. Foram destacados dois períodos na História da Universidade de São Paulo mais significativos para a comprovação da tese: a Fundação e a Reforma. Constatou-se que houve ruptura do modelo da Universidade de São Paulo e da concepção do plano físico da Cidade Universitária "Armando de Salles Oliveira". A permanência da situação de isolamento das faculdades e escolas muito após a criação da Universidade, a substituição do modelo universitário, e as sucessivas alterações no plano da Cidade Universitária do Butantã foram fatores que contribuíram para a dissociação entre os princípios citados e o espaço que os deveria expressar. A presente tese se limita às instalações da Universidade de São Paulo na Capital do Estado.

The objective of this research is the relationship between the University of São Paulo and the space where it is located, that would be its physical expression, the University Campus. This thesis shows that the two main principles of the creation of the university campus, the university integration and the association that shapes the university spirit, didn't come to a realization in the university campus space. The meaning of the expression "university integration" used in this work is the opposite of the existence of the isolated and self-sufficient faculties in the education of its students and in the management of its facilities. The two most significant periods in the University of São Paulo history were highlighted for the proof of this thesis: the Foundation and the Reform. It was noticed that there was a rupture of the University of São Paulo model and the conception of the University Campus "Armando Salles de Oliveira". The permanence of the situation of isolation of the faculties and school, a long time after the creation of the University, the substitution of the university model and the successive modifications in the Butantã University Campus plan were factors that contributed to the dissociation between the principles mentioned and the space that should have expressed them. This work has restricted itself to the University of São Paulo in the state capital facilities.
