Abstract in English
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the quality of the popular residential furniture which has been mass-produced in Brazil, mainly the onse using particleboard and hardboard. This alternative raw material coming from the planted forests supplies the furniture industry in Brazil. Emphasis is given to the furniture industry, which uses this kind of raw material, concerning the employed technology, the main characteristics and the problems which may arise from the furniture design. In addition to this, special attention is given to the role of the designer and to the popular furniture consumer as well. As there is a lack of quality parameters when checking the quality of the popular furniture, this paper will be discussing the contribution and the effects of the technical standartization on the mass-produced furniture and on the employed material. The government procedures to make this industry more competitive due to the internationalizing and openess of the marketplace will be also examined throughout this paper. The experience of France, a well-known country in this furniture field will be pointed out with a view to determine the quality level of the furniture and to inform the consumer about the quality of the furniture he will be purchasing.
