Abstract in English
The present thesis deals with Brazilian material culture, specifically contemporary furniture design during the three last decades of the twentieth century. The initial aim was to rescue the historic relation of object configuration measured by the trilogy designer/ work/ means of production. The main premise here is the understanding that material culture of certain periods and peoples reveal the backbone of their symbolism and that artifacts have the power to alter social relations and establish cultural value in a society, while expressing the historic context in which they are inserted. The idea is to demonstrate that "The design of Brazilian contemporary furniture" is base on a diversity of project solutions - esthetics, materials, means of production - and on the representability of national and universal material culture, represented basically through visual codes and elements of configuration/ production in the design of the object.
