Title in Portuguese
Artigas: a liberdade na inversão do olhar; modernidade e arquitetura brasileira
Keywords in Portuguese
Arquitetura moderna (Brasil)
João Batista Vilanova Artigas (1915-1985)

Abstract in English
This thesis intends to discuss the critical position of the architect Vilanova Artigas in connection with the so called Brazilian modern architecture, in the early fifties, considering the international panorama in which this critical position emerged. With this in mind we investigate two elements strongly influenced the thought of Artigas, modernity and socialism, their similarities and divergences, considering the cirumstances of the Cold War. We demonstrate how the inversion of the critical view in two special moments of great tension allowed Artigas to formulate tha basis of a new theory called Arquitetura Brasileira, which explores the limits of the situation, proposing sometimes the dialog and at other times the contraditions between permanence and invention of the creative movement of modernity.
