Dynamics of wage inequality in the formal sector of the state of São Paulo (1990-1998): a study of variance components

Abstract in English
This work seeks to analyze the dynamic behavior of wage inequality in the formal labor market of the State of São Paulo in the years 1990-1998 by means of a decomposition of the wage covariance structure in its permanent and transitory components. The permanent component is in general attributed to individual productivity characteristics, whereas the transitory part is associated to stochastic disturbances around the individual earnings profile. Its aim is to fit an econometric model of variance components to the observed variance-covariance structure in order to evaluate the relative importance of long run inequality in comparison to earnings instability as factors behind overall inequality. The analysis is based on a panel data set constructed from RAIS data (official data for the formal labor market); several different models are estimated and tested using Minimum Distance techniques.
