Abstract in English
This thesis investigated the scalability of technology-based start-up companies focused on developing solutions to agribusiness problems (agtechs). Scalability can be characterized as the phase in which companies gain scale in operations through an increase in the number of customers and a slow evolution of operating costs compared to the increase in revenues. This phase, although very important, is not reached by all startups. In this context, this thesis had as its main objective to propose and evaluate a multidimensional model artifact capable of helping Brazilian agtechs in the initial stage of development to overcome the barrier of the initial conception of the business model based on the investigation of trajectories, procedures, and experiences adopted by agtechs that are already in the scalability phase (scale-up). Given the complexity of the topic, this thesis was organized into four interrelated articles that used bibliometric study, thinking aloud sessions, in-depth interviews, and design science research (DSR) as a methodological approach, respectively. The results presented evidenced: (I) the evolution of the literature in the agricultural sector, from its systematization to the development of technology-based start-up companies applied to agribusiness (agtechs); (II) the various forms of service provision by agtechs and the importance of having a classification model for them that adheres to the Brazilian reality; (III) the main influencing elements of the scalability of these companies, as well as (IV) the creation and evaluation of a multidimensional model (containing 4 dimensions: environmental, evaluative, structural and objective) capable of helping agtechs that have not yet broken/surpassed the barrier of the initial conception of the business model.
